Two weeks with BAS
Hey All,
I know it’s been a while since I’ve put anything here. Time is really flying! It feels like I only arrived a day or two ago while in fact it’s been over two weeks now!
So how did my first two weeks go? In short, I’ve had a brilliant time so far, on so many levels!
The journey begins…
It’s a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning. I’m sitting in the car, in Dublin Port, waiting to board the ferry which will take me to the UK. This moment marks the beginning of my new journey.
Yesterday I’ve emptied the apartment which was my home for the last two and a half years, dropped the last load to the storage, packed the car, gave the keys back to the landlady… It’s an end of an era, and a beginning of a new adventure!
Preparations continue…
I’ve been quiet for a while now, but this is all because of the preparations. There’s so much stuff I still need to do, but I think I’m getting on top of it all now.
Travel…
Holy shit, it’s happening! I’ve just booked the flights to go home for a week after finishing my current job and also a ferry ticket to the UK for mid-July to go to Cambridge… 🙂
Still have a number of things to sort out, with the two most important ones being the storage in Ireland for my stuff (the decision is made already on the facility, and it’s all starting mid-June) and arranging a place to stay in Cambridge.
So it seems June and July are shaping up to be travel-intensive (at least more than my usual months)!
Six weeks to go
Time is flying. It’s been over a month since my job at British Antarctic Survey as Data Manager has been confirmed. I’m still finding it hard to believe this is really happening… how many people get to realise a dream of their life? I don’t know, but probably not many… I really am a lucky guy!
Anyway. I’m getting more and more busy with preparations for the trip. I’m still not sure of everything that I need to do or take with me, however the list is getting clearer and clearer as the time passes…

Wow! A lot has happened over the last few weeks!

Back in February I have applied for a position of Data Manager with British Antarctic Survey. It was a long late night filling the application forms, making sure my CV is up to date, deciding on references (who can I ask can they be my reference at 3am)?… Full of hope and not expecting much I clicked “Submit”… and went to bed. This was actually the second time I’ve applied to BAS – the first time, in 2009 for the position of Wintering Communications Manager, was not successful.
Two full weeks later I got an email from BAS with an invitation to the interview! I booked the day off with my current employer, bought the flight tickets and waited patiently until the day — 16 of April.
